AJ/RPS Urban Design Scholarship Programme

The AJ/RPS Urban Design Scholarship Programme is an opportunity for three AJ readers to immerse themselves in the world of urban design. As a competition winner you will work with a Design for London mentor and will originate or help develop an existing project. You will also receive a grant of up to £6000 pounds during the course of the scholarship. The scheme is open to anyone with a flair for design, and an interest in influencing urban change at any stage of their career, from recent graduates to practice partners and directors.

In the first month you will be required to visit and work with your mentor for at least 4 days at Design for London’s offices, and to establish which project you wish to develop. After that, you and your mentor will set mutually agreed attendance times, although a monthly meeting with your mentor is a minimum requirement.

While working on the projects you will become a monthly contributor to the AJ’s website and be regularly interviewed in the AJ as we report on your progress. You will also be required to join an expert panel of speakers for the AJ/RPS Urban Design Symposium at the RIBA on the evening of 9th July.

At the end of your scholarship (lasting a maximum of six months) you will be expected to produce substantive and original work which will be exhibited in a London gallery and published in AJ.

The programme is an amazing opportunity for you to participate in the work of Design for London, whilst improving your understanding of the business of urban design and the processes of making and remaking pieces of the city. In addition, you will be interviewed in the AJ, attend Design for London briefings with Richard Rogers and other senior staff, and have the chance to make contacts with influential decision makers you will meet along the way.
